http://www.quotenik.com/
I was directed to this site by design sponge on twitter. I really like it and wish I had seen it before i designed my comikaze site. Everything is easy to find and the design fits the content well. I love the hand drawn quality of the illustrations. The way the site functions is intuitive and overall it's fun but can prove to be a great resource for a multitude of projects.
Navigation
The main navigation is pretty nontraditional in the sense that its a bunch of speech bubbles, like i said, i wish I knew how to do that for my comikaze site. The content of the site is pretty straight forward, its site about quotes, and the navigations tackles pretty effectivley what one would want to sort though a plethora of quotes; View by: Author or category, submit a quote, contact, about and blog.
Once clicked, the navigation's look stays the same. Although there are no large titles, its pretty evidendent where you are on the site. It's always just one click away to the home page as well.
Architecture
The architecture of the site seems to be pretty shallow, but that's just in response to its content. The architecture is pretty flat, which is a good thing for the subject of quote finding.
Content/Typography
Content/Typography
The hierarchy of the typography is very apparent. Important labels are set on the left side and content kind of floats next to it. The dates of the quotes are set in red to make them more apparent and tags are set in all caps in a small size.
Grid/Structure
The layout of the pages stay consistent from one page to the other. Everything stay consistent with the exception of the bounding box that surrounds the "Quote of the day" and other content that shifts size to fit the new content from page to page. The first thing I notice looking at the site is the quote of the day, mostly because it's set in a huge size.
Iconography/Imagery
The imagery of the quotation mark pattern adds the the site, just again, reinforcing what the site is al about. I wonder what adding picures of the authors of the quotes would do for the site. It might be interesting but it also may be weird to see that something that is maybe supposed to be motivational, or inspirational in conjunction with a picture of the person who said it. The picture may not live up to expectations of the viewers thoughts. There is also a stamping kind of look going throughout the whole site. I'm not sure what that has to do with quotes, but honestly it feels right.
Color Palette
The whole website is basically 2 colors. tints and shades of a beige color and then pops of red throughout. I think they were chosen to look like old paper or something.
Site Focus
The objective of the site is to archive verified quotes by various people . The only call to action aside from contacting the sites creators seems to be the ability to submit a quote. A search bar is right in the header in the nac to encourage one to search for quotes by their favorite people or authors. the most useful thing about the site is the "view quotes by: author, category" because it lets the viewer easily find exactly what they are looking for.
